Africa Mercy Congo Screening a Success

Over 7,000 people came to screening for evaluation and 4,236 are potential patients. One of the finest moments on Mercy Ships screening said Donovan Palmer, Africa Mercy Managing Director about the main screening/patient selection held on 28 August in Pointe-Noire, Congo. Patient admission already began and on Monday starts surgeries. Dental and Eye screenings will be held next week. Mobile medical screening teams are getting prepared for up country screening.

Mercy Ships Screening in the Republic of Congo

The Africa Mercy medical crew will start the medical screening tomorrow in Pointe Noire, Republic of Congo. With only 1 doctor for every 100,000 people and even fewer dentists, this country has huge medical needs, and the President has asked Mercy Ships to help meet those needs. The people of Congo will be waiting by the thousands, prayers appreciated for patients, crew, organization, selection, calm and for those we can not help.

Africa Mercy First Visit to the Republic of Congo

The Mercy Ships Africa Mercy, the world’s largest non-governmental hospital ship, will spend ten months (until June 2014) in Point Noire, Republic of Congo, providing free specialized surgeries and training for healthcare workers. Mercy Ships expects to provide approximately 1550 surgeries and 1900 cataract removal in the hospital onboard the ship. The medical team will serve almost 10,000 dental patients, mentor 40-50 local medical professionals, and train hundreds in specialized courses.

The Africa Mercy arrives in the Republic of Congo

After a smooth sail from the Canary Islands the Mercy Ships Africa Mercy arrived in the Republic of Congo. The crew was greeted by Mercy Ships Founders Don and Deyon Stephens on quay. The arrival ceremony was attended by Ministry of Health, Prefects and Mayors, plus military leader and other officials. See below sailing pictures.

Africa Mercy Sailing to Congo

The Africa Mercy sailed from Tenerife, Canary Islands to the Democratic Republic of Congo on August 27, 2013. The Vessel is current sailing at the Guinea coast making good progress toward destination. The crew enjoys the relatively calm sail and numerous dolphins and turtles.
