Sunday Veritas: Brain Fatigue

According to scientists, brain fatigue leads to memory loss, distraction, forgetfulness, and lack of concentration. Especially in urban areas, a hectic way of living leaves no space for brain recovery. In a New York Times article entitled “Easing Brain Fatigue With a Walk in the Park”, Gretchen Reynolds, says that “With brain fatigue, you are easily distracted, forgetful and mentally flighty.” She comments that recent study suggests that calm and focus can be restored by spending time with nature, even a walk in the park. The study points out that trees and green have a calming effect in contrast to fatigue and lack of concentration produced by busy urban scenery.

Jesus knew about the restoring power of trees and green as he left the chaotic pace of Jerusalem to spend the night in a mountain ridge covered with olive groves east of Jerusalem called Mount of Olive. Luke says in his Gospel that: “Each day Jesus was teaching at the temple, and each evening he went out to spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives, and all the people came early in the morning to hear him at the temple.” Luke 21:37-38)

He frequently retired to quiet places for mind, body and soul restoration. In the chapter six of his Gospel, Mark describe one of this days that began in Jesus’ own hometown. He and his disciples taught, healed and ministered to peoples need. At the end of the day they were exhausted. Verse 30 and 31 says: “The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”

Those scriptures highlight two principles. The first is the need to recognize that your body, spirit and mind need time for recovery. You get tired and weary and need rest, recognition is the first step to recovery. Second, removing yourself from the source of stress and brain drainage, and going to a place with trees and green like Jesus did going to Mount Olive, restores your brain.

Now, where or what is Mount Olive for you; the place where you find peace and clam for brain recovery? And take the time to go there.
