Well-Behaved Children

There was a positive and rewarding story this week on the News and on the Internet about a family who received a discount in a restaurant for their well-behaved children. The owner of an Italian restaurant in Kingston, Washington was so impressed with the children behavior and their polite manners that she added a well behaved kids discount to the family bill.

In an age when kids are targeted by ill taste reality shows where bad behavior equals notoriety; it is refreshing to hear news praising kids’ good behavior in a public place.  It is evident that the education of those children ages 8, 3, and 2 began at home where the mother works on the kid’s dinner manner. These parents expect the family to behave outside home the same way they behave at home.

Safety training stresses what behavioral experts call “muscles memory”, which means that people act in an emergency the same way they practice for an emergency. Therefore you should practice the same way you want to do a particular task or behavior. Children table manners are the same, parents should not expect them to behave outside the home differently than they were trained at home.

What to learn from this episode? Good family behavior is valued, cherished and noticed by others; the notion that one needs to behave badly in order to gain attention is worthless. The family is the primary place for development of good behavior; those behaviors will follow the child his entire life. Also children trained to behave properly inside the home and in public places are a delight to parents and others.
